Digital Audio - Psychoacoustical Localization of Sounds within the 3- Dimensional Soundstage
نویسنده
چکیده
As objects vibrate, they cause changes in the air pressure, which our ears perceive as sounds that could be translated by our brains as speech, music or noise (Garba 2007b). The four basic characteristics of sound include frequency, amplitude, harmonics and direction from which a sound is coming. The frequency describes the rate at which the air vibrates per second, measured in hertz (Hz). Amplitude is a measure of the loudness of the sound, while harmonics are the exact integer (or whole number) multiples of the fundamental frequency that are responsible for sonic distinction known as timbre ((Garba 2007b), (Atkinson 2006)). The aforementioned premise establishes the localization of sound within a given 3dimensional space known as soundstage. This paper, therefore, addresses some practicable solutions with regard to the theories, laws, principles and systems of psychoacoustical localization of sounds during recording, mixing and mastering in digital audio production.

Auditory Time-Frequency Masking: Psychoacoustical Data and Application to Audio Representations
In this paper, the results of psychoacoustical experiments on auditory time-frequency (TF) masking using stimuli (masker and target) with maximal concentration in the TF plane are presented. The target was shifted either along the time axis, the frequency axis, or both relative to the masker. The results show that a simple superposition of spectral and temporal masking functions does not provid...
متن کاملراهکار جدید استخراج ویژگی مبتنی بر نمونهبرداری فشرده در پردازش سیگنالهای صوتی
In this paper, we present a Compressive Sampling (CS)-based feature extraction method for audio signals. In the proposed approach, the audio signal is firstly segmented by hamming windows and the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) of the samples is calculated within each frame. Then, the normalized values of the DFT coefficients of each frame are accumulated. At the next step, the second DFT is a...
متن کاملPsychological measurement for sound description and evaluation
Several domains of application require one to measure quantities that are representative of what a human listener perceives. Sound quality evaluation, for instance, studies how users perceive the quality of the sounds of industrial objects (cars, electrical appliances, electronic devices, etc.), and establishes specifications for the design of these sounds. It refers to the fact that the sounds...
متن کاملThe Use of 3-D Audio in a Synthetic Environment: Building an “Aural Renderer” for a Distributed Virtual Reality System
We have investigated the addition of spatially-localized sound to an existing graphics-oriented simulationbased synthetic environment—the SICS Distributed Interactive Virtual Environment. To build “3-D audio” systems that are robust, listener-independent, real-time, multi-source and able to give stable sound localization is beyond the current state-of-the-art—even using expensive special-purpos...
متن کاملA Gammatone-based Psychoacoustical Modeling Approach for Speech and Audio Coding
We propose a new approach for modeling auditory masking based on gammatone filters for application areas including speech/audio coding and audio watermarking. Besides the use of gammatone filters, this model differs from existing audio coding psychoacoustical models (e.g., the ones used in MPEG), in taking into account the contribution of a range of filters in computing the distortion, rather t...
